Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, 3,987 American soldiers and at least 128 journalists have died in Iraq since the U.S.-led war began. But to me, they were all just numbers until last year.

However, upon reaching the tracks, my cellphone rang and it was Jim Cantore (well, his taped Notify! voice, not an actual live call), saying that there was a severe thunderstorm warning for DeKalb County, the county which is just east of Atlanta, and where I live. I had completely tuned out weather during the game and hadn’t known that thunderstorms had developed, and upon checking the radar on my TWC phone app, thought, “uh-oh, that’s an intense isolated storm, and it sure looks like a supercell,” although the small image size made it hard to see much detail.
